Can you work multiple jobs on OPT? Usually yes — and it can be the stronger play

The 'one perfect full-time offer' model doesn't match how the U.S. market actually hires. Two relevant roles often build a better profile than one long gap.

One of the first things students hear after graduation is that they need a single, perfect, full-time job before the OPT clock runs out. The market rarely cooperates with that plan. Plenty of candidates start with a contract role, a part-time position, or two projects at once while they keep searching — and under OPT, multiple jobs are generally permitted provided the work relates to your field of study.

The goal is relevant experience, not employment

OPT exists to let you apply your education in a real working environment. If you're doing analytics for one company and building reporting dashboards for a startup, and both connect to your degree, you're not treading water — you're accumulating evidence. In a selective market, evidence is the thing recruiters are short of.

Why candidates choose this route

U.S. hiring processes take weeks and often months. Rather than wait in place for the ideal offer, many candidates take relevant work in the meantime. It matters because of what recruiters actually ask. They rarely ask whether you were employed. They ask what you built, what you fixed, and what changed because you were there.

“Two relevant roles tell a better story than one clean gap. Nobody has ever been impressed by an empty six months spent waiting for the right title.”

The part that gets people into trouble

Being allowed to work multiple jobs doesn't mean every job qualifies. The work has to connect to your degree programme, and your reporting and records need to be accurate for each employer — including start dates, hours, and how the role relates to your field. This is the detail that turns a good strategy into a compliance problem, and it's worth confirming with your DSO rather than a group chat.

Before you take the second role, ask

  • Does this genuinely connect to my degree, in language I could defend in writing?
  • Is the employer set up correctly for my authorisation, and have I reported it properly?
  • Will this make my profile stronger in six months, or just busier now?
  • Does it leave me enough time to keep interviewing for the role I actually want?

That last question is the one candidates skip. OPT isn't only a countdown — it's a window to build experience employers value. A couple of smart steps sideways often reach the destination faster than waiting for one straight line. If you want help judging whether a contract role strengthens your profile or just fills it, that's what we're here for.
